Can I open a bank account online without going to the bank?

Going to the bank to open a bank account can be a tiresome process; you have to deal with lines and a lot of paperwork. It’s also inconvenient for people living in remote areas. This is a guide on how to open a bank account online without going to the bank in South Africa.

Not long ago; it was impossible to open a bank account online. 2020 forced a lot of banks to find convenient alternatives for people to open bank accounts without going to the bank.

Yes, it’s possible to open a bank account online without going to the bank in some banks in South Africa. Namely TymeBank, Nedbank and Capitec Bank.

How do you do it?

I personally have done it on Tymebank and Nedbank, the process is very similar. All you need is an ID number; a cell phone number, and email address and a smartphone in some cases.

The easiest place to open a bank account online is TymeBank; from my experiences; it takes less than 5 minutes and doesn’t require a lot of things. All you need is an ID/Passport, email address and a phone number.

Nedbank and other major banks require you to have a smartphone with a front camera; so that you can scan your face. You don’t need to submit the documents on TymeBank and Nedbank; this means you won’t have to scan any documents. I have yet to open an account online with other banks and this article will be updated when I do.

How do you get the card?

With Tymebank; you have to go to Pick N Pay or anywhere where there is a Tymebank machine and ask for them to make you a card. Nedbank delivers the card to you or you can collect it at your nearest branch.

This is something you can do from almost all the major banks in South Africa; I am not sure of Absa because there is no information with regards to that online.

Conclusion

You can open a bank account online without going to the bank with most major banks in South Africa. Do you have any thoughts or questions? Comment below.
