10 Niche ideas for South African bloggers

These are the top 10 niche ideas for South African bloggers.

One of the first things that you should consider when it comes to blogging is your niche. There are hundreds of niches that you can choose from and they all pretty much work. However, there are some niches that you should stay away from.

Niches that you should stay away from are generally over populated, it would be very difficult for you to succeed in them. These niches are usually cooking and fitness related. A lot of bloggers from the USA have written a lot on cooking and fitness, it would be very difficult for you to outperform them.

1. Food

I have just said that food related blogs are very difficult, however, there is a way you can use to go around this. There are hundreds of blogs that are related to food and recipes but there aren’t that many blogs that are focused on South African cuisine and recipes.

Start a blog that focuses strictly on South African food and you won’t have a lot of competition, try to cover all South African cuisine from traditional food like samp and magwinya.

2. Pet Care

The pet care niche is one that is not overly populated and has a lot of subniches that you can choose from. Instead of making a website that focuses on pets, you can make a blog that focuses strictly on snakes. There are a lot of people who own snakes in South Africa, there are also many more people that want to own snakes.

Your blog can focus on providing all information related to snakes, how to take care of them, what to look out for and answer any frequently asked questions. This was just an example, you can focus on dogs, horses, rabbits and cats. The pet care niche has a lot of earning potential.

3. Economics

Sounds like a boring topic? It might be, but people who read such blogs usually have a lot of disposable income. You can make more money talking about economics than you would with any other niche on this list.

A lot of people don’t know about economics, this could be the chance for you to educate them. Provide high quality and useful content. You might stretch this out to other countries and do economic analysis of other African countries.

4. Travel

Travel related blogs often require a lot of resources, it’s much better to blog about travel experiences that you have had. This would be a perfect blog if you are a person that generally likes travelling.

The travel niche includes writing everything about your destination, write detailed reviews about the restaurants that you went to when you were in a particular city. Give out all information that travellers would seek.

5. Housing

This is a very underserved niche that is ripe for picking, there are a lot of things you can write about in this niche. It is also one of the higher paying niches. A lot of people generally have questions when it comes to housing, how much does land cost? How much do I have to pay to build a house from scratch?

There is a lot of valuable information you can give to people. You can also go into how they should set up their furniture, talk about colour contrasts, I could go on for a long time. It’s a high paying niche because homeowners have a lot of money, unlike teenagers or students. Advertisers pay more to advertise on a website that has an audience that has disposable income.

6. Farming

With all the talk of land and more people going into farming, you can bet that thousands of people are searching for information online about farming. There is not a lot of farming related information online. There is so much content that can be produced in this area, farming is very broad and farmers usually have disposable income.

7. Plants and gardening

This is a very high paying niche, there is a website that strictly focuses on growing succulents and they make over 2 million Rands per month. What are succulents? See image below. You would think that a lot of people don’t care about succulents, most people don’t even know what they are.

This space has a lot of earning potential from both ad revenue, affiliate marketing and to selling short informational guides or eBooks.

8. Real Estate

Real estate and housing are two different niches, a lot of people are looking to invest in real estate in South Africa but don’t even know where to start. They don’t know how much money they need to succeed and all the legal hurdles they have to go through. You can provide them with all this information, this is a high paying niche.

9. Hobbies

Hobby based blogs are just the best, you usually have a ton of content to write about. Your content is likely to be unique, you don’t have to research much because your information is based on personal experiences. You can make a blog about fishing, hiking, camping, dirt biking, photography (don’t), anything.

Hobby based blogs are usually perfect for affiliate marketing, if for example you have a blog that Is focused on camping, you can recommend all the best gear that you have used personally to your audience. Your audience is likely to trust your opinion and buy the gear, you get to earn money from commission. Read more about affiliate marketing here.

10. News

This is the lowest paying niche; you don’t get to make a lot of money from news. This is because news-based websites are likely pushing out low quality content that doesn’t attract people with high disposable income. Especially if your blog is centred around celebrity news and gossip. People on home gardening usually earn 7 times more than news website, even when both sites are receiving the same amount of traffic.

The upside to news blogs is that you can get a lot of traffic quickly, it’s very easy to promote a news website, just write a catchy, gossipy title put it on social media. It’s likely to be clicked multiple times. For this reason, a news blog will start making money sooner than any other niche, you can make money within a month or 2 months while you have to wait for at least 6 months before making money on other niches.

Niches to avoid

Avoid anything that is related to medicine. Medicine is a super important subject, Google will not trust your blog enough to ever show it on the search results, people might get hurt taking medical advice from you. You won’t make money in this niche.

Other niches to avoid are finance related niches, this website is a finance related niche. It’s super difficult to make it in this space, you need a lot of experience on SEO and blogging in general and you take a lot longer to make money, over 18 months.

Avoid beauty related niches, there is a ton of competition and you are just not going to stand out well enough. Also try to avoid general health niches, focus on subniches like tea, you can make a website that is completely focused on tea and its health benefits. But don’t make a general health website like men’s health or women’s health.

Number of posts

How many posts do you think you have to make in your blog? 5, 10, 20? You have to write at the very least 30 blog posts but you need to write 50 blog posts to be on the safe side. Write at least 75 blog posts to guarantee your success.

Whatever niche you choose, make sure you can write about at least 50 topics.

Conclusion
